Majorca is well-known for its gorgeous beaches, balmy temperatures and range of activities to keep everyone entertained, so it’s no wonder that you’re considering it for your family holiday. There’s nothing quite like packing up the hire car to enjoy a day on the sand, and you can be sure that everyone will leave with happy memories, from kids to parents alike. The smell of suncream and the sand in your beach shoes will remind you of this trip for years to come.
But how can you make sure that you have a day to remember for all the right reasons? We share some top tips to help you have the perfect day.
Choose your spot
With more than 200 beaches to choose from, it can be hard to narrow it down to just one beautiful stretch. From rocky coves to paradisiacal waters, Majorca truly has an option to suit everyone. When choosing your spot, make sure to do your research, as going to a beach with no facilities might not be the most restful outcome, particularly when you have the little ones in tow.
Close to the capital of Palma, the clear waters of Cala Comtessa make an ideal choice for families with small children who won’t tolerate a long car journey. It’s also got a long shallow stretch and a cafe, meaning that children can paddle in safety and refresh with an ice cream afterwards. Just make sure you keep applying sunscreen if you’re out in the sun for long periods of time, and bag a spot in the shade of the trees when you arrive, ready for an afternoon nap.
Pack your picnic
All that splashing around and sandcastle building is sure to result in everyone working up an appetite. Whilst you can of course pick a beach with a local restaurant, to save pulling everyone out of the waves, pack a picnic. Then, you can snack as the day goes on, and children can grab food as and when they need it.
Head to the local market before you leave and stock up on some delicious treats, including olives, fresh bread and cheese. For families staying in Palma, Mercat de l’Olivar is the place to go. If you’re walking to the beach, perhaps even treat the adults to a local wine to really get in the holiday spirit. You’re sure to be hungry again by the middle of the afternoon, so pack some traditional Majorcan coca de cuarto cake to serve up alongside a dollop of ice cream from the beach kiosk.
Keep the kids entertained
Family holidays should be about spending quality time together, whether that’s all at once or one parent at a time whilst the other naps behind their holiday reading. Whilst younger children might be content to paddle and dig in the sand, older children and teens will need something a little more active.
Luckily, Majorca has plenty to keep everyone busy. From snorkelling to windsurfing, there’s an abundance of activities for all ages and ability levels. Why not book a family surfing lesson, or take a kayak out around the coves? You’re sure to have a good time, and get an experience you might not be able to have at home.
