We recently had the absolute pleasure of receiving in the post a beautiful and entirely hand-crafted pop-up book for children, from Fabulastic. Based in Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain, they are the makers of the world’s first personalised pop-up books for children. The books are available to be printed in a choice of 6 different languages.
When creating a book, you first get to choose the gender of your character, followed by the character appearance from a selection. You then enter the name of your character and your own personalised message to be printed inside the front of the book. In our case, to avoid our first three children inevitably fighting over the book, we chose to personalise ours for our newest, 4th baby, to have as a special keepsake for him for when he gets older.
After only a relatively short wait, we were excited to receive our customised book, well packaged and sent to us in the UK. When we opened the package, we weren’t disappointed. The book is sturdy and well made, measuring approximately 30cm x 30cm in size. Each page has been beautifully hand crafted with a selection of colourful cardboard cutouts that utilise a variety of folding techniques. A couple of the pages also incorporate moving elements. To avoid being damaged, the books are recommended for children aged 3+.
The story in the book tells a fun tale of adventure, based around your chosen child character. They move through a variety of landscapes while meeting a selection of animal characters along the way. The book also tries to teach the positive messages of generosity, respect for the environment and teamwork. The environmental emphasis of the book is backed up with a pledge from the publishers to plant 1 new tree for every book sold.
Overall, although the books may seem a little expensive compared to other standard books, the level of individual attention and time taken to hand-craft such a book, both go a long way towards justifying such a price tag. If you’re looking for a special and individual present to give to a child or new baby, these books make a great alternative to some of the more standard and readily available gift ideas. I imagine such a book would be a treasured and often revisited keepsake for any child to be lucky enough to own.
